There’s no way to ignore the elephant in the room here: the premise of this movie is (to be as absolutely forgiving as possible) is as worn as the tissues your grandmother keeps stuffed up her sleeve. On the ranking of archetypical stories it falls someplace at the bottom of the list along with low-rent standards like “dog that thinks it’s people” or “stripper fights crime.”

Like most sequels, if you like the first you’ll probably like this. Also like most sequels there’s a very good chance that you won’t like this as much.

This is one of those movies that simply over-stays its welcome. You will laugh – at least a little. But a royal, fantasy prince saying “fuck” is only funny once… maybe twice. Here you get it about 148 times. That minotaur dick joke was mildly funny. Missed it? Don’t worry, it’ll get referenced 20 more times.

Hall Pass is the latest in the long line of formula, raunchy, over-the-top comedies. Take some likable people, place them in a ridiculous situation toss in some toilet humor, work up to a crisis and end with a melodramatic sequence to prove that the movie has a heart.
