Movie Review: Kick-Ass 2

IMDB, Kick-ass 2Kick-Ass 2 on IMDB

Action, 103 Minutes, 2013

The original Kick-Ass [IMDB] was my favorite movie of 2010 and one of the best comic book adaptations ever made.  While s0me were critical of the changes made to the story I thought that they suited the medium better while honoring the spirit of the original well.

Horror, 97 Minutes, 2012

This were, in the slang of the participants, shit.

A once popular band is trying to pull out of a downward spiral.  In a last ditch effort to impress their record company they lock themselves in crappy warehouse for the weekend to make a comeback video.

Movie Review: R.I.P.D

IMDB, RIPD“R.I.P.D.” on IMDB

Action/Comedy, 96 Minutes, 2013

What if the “Men in Black” [IMDB] hunted ghosts instead of aliens?  That’s the movie in a nutshell. Not at all original, but also not a bad idea, really.  The agents, here, are dead themselves and doing community service on Earth before being allowed into Heaven.  The fugitive ghosts hiding among us need to be found and revealed so that they can be put down for good.

Movie Review: The Host

IMDB, The Host [2013]“The Host” on IMDB

Sci-fi, 125 Minutes, 2013

This really wasn’t such a bad idea but tell me, Stephanie Meyer fans, does every single, blessed thing she writes involve a blank, emotionless girl in a love triangle?  Is it a new genre, like Dub Step or dinosaur porn, that I’ve just been blissfully unaware of?

Movie Review: The Perfect Host

IMDB, The Perfect Host“The Perfect Host” on IMDB

Thriller, 93 Minutes, 2010

Taking a break from gorging on the summer blockbusters we missed, we gave this little indie darling a try. The decision was based solely on David Hyde Pierce’s [IMDB] participation – his very first starring role, no less. We had no preconceptions and little idea what to expect.

Movie Review: The Trouble with the Curve

Drama, 111 Minutes, 2012

I’m not a sports fan.  I don’t really have much use for them.  Sure I’ve had the occasional decent time watching a game with friends and  I’m just as mesmerized as the next guy by the insanity that parades across ESPN 3 but, in general, they’re just not my thing.  Too much work for too little gain, in my opinion.

But I love sports movies.

Movie Review: Dredd

IMDB, Dredd“Dredd” on IMDB

Action, 95 Minutes, 2013:

The original attempt at capturing “Britain’s Number One Comic Hero”, 1995’s “Judge Dredd” [IMDB] was, let’s be honest, not a terrible movie.  It was a bit ham-fisted and trite but also had a decent story, some great design work and lots of action.  It was not, however, a good Judge Dredd movie.  It tried, lord knows it tried.  In the final judgement (get it?!) it just didn’t capture the character very well.  While some fans considered the removal of the character’s helmet pure sacrilege the issues went deeper than that.  The movie ended up too light, to uneven and just plain too Hollywood.

Movie Review: Despicable Me 2

IMDB, Despicable Me 2“Despicable Me 2” on IMDB

Comedy, 98 Minutes, 2013

Had some trouble getting into this one.  The core story is straightforward but, overall, forgettable.  Our reformed hero, Gru, with his three foundlings in tow, is recruited by an anti-villain organization to help them investigate, um, villains.

Movie Review: Monsters University

IMDB, Monsters University“Monsters University” on IMDB

Comedy, 104 Minutes, 2013

I’ve said it before, and I’ll continue to say it until they prove me wrong: Pixar doesn’t make bad movies.  They just don’t.  Some of their movies are worse than others, but none of them are bad.  This one is, in fact, worse than others.  It’s a super cliched story.  Mike and Sully, bestest friends for life, are introduced when, get this, they didn’t like each other!  They join the worst fraternity on campus and have to compete against the best fraternity… who are also total jerks!

Movie Review: Picture Day

IMDB, Picture Day“Picture Day” on IMDB

Comedy/Drama, 93 Minutes, 2013

We gave this a shot because, after watching the excellent BBC America series “Orphan Black” [IMDB] we became very impressed with Tatiana Maslany [IMDB].  Her turn as an entire group of clones, all with radically distinct personalities, is truly impressive.  Very highly recommended.

This movie?  It’s fine.
