“Hansel & Gretel: With Hunters” on IMDB
Adventure, 114 Minutes, 2013
This is directly in line with other high-firepower, low-respect updates of old-world classics like 2004’s “Van Helsing” [IMDB] or 2005’s “The Brother’s Grimm” [IMDB]. The formula gets tweaked but is basically the same: a hot guy and a hotter gal take on monsters with completely unrealistic steampunk firepower.

Black Mesa is an unauthorized, total recreation of Valve Software’s 1998’s seminal classic “Half-Life” using the Source Engine pioneered in “Half-Life 2”. The large, all-volunteer team spent over eight-years to reach this point and released the first portion of the game, encompassing the first 13 chapters of the 17 chapter game. Only the questionable “Xen” final sequence of the game has been eliminated but will reportedly be released by the end of the year.
“The Immaculate Conception of Little Dizzle” on IMDB
Comedy, 98 Minutes, 2009
At the risk of starting out with a spoiler: this is a movie about little, blue butt-fish. It may, indeed, be about more than that but what will stick with you and what you’ll talk about with people that haven’t seen it is little, blue butt-fish. This may be considered, in fact, the official anthem movie for little, blue butt-fish.
Adventure/Drama, 127 Minutes, 2012
One of the most common remarks heard before this released was that the book was “un-filmable”. After it was released, all you really heard was “ooh! A tiger!” The truth, in my opinion, lies someplace in between.

This is the first truly new take on Superman in film since Richard Donner’s [IMDB] 1978 classic “Superman” [IMDB]. Bryan Singer’s [IMDB] 2006 “Superman Returns” [IMDB] essentially completed Donner’s Superman films (rightly ignoring the execrable, non-Donner, third and fourth films). While this excellent film is often misunderstood it must be considered an extension of Donner’s vision rather than a true reboot of DC’s flagship character.
Comedy, 103 Minutes, 2010
Stand back and let me pitch this to you: two young people meet at college, fall in love and get engaged. She drops out of school to follow her dream, he plans on taking her to Laos as part of “Doctors without Borders”. They haven’t told their parents any of it!
“Oz the Great and Powerful” on IMDB
Fantasy, 130 Minutes, 2013
The Oz-stories have charmed people for over a century and, in fact, were first put to film by Frank L. Baum himself in 1914. The 1939 “Wizard of Oz” [IMDB] is a well-deserved and universally known classic. The unofficial sequel in 1985,”Return to Oz”, [IMDB] was brilliantly dark but is often misunderstood or just plain forgotten. This time director Sam Raimi [IMDB] dives into the pool with a lovingly crafted prequel.
Comedy/Horror, 94 Minutes, 2012
We had it in our heads, for some reason, that this was going to be another terrible SyFy Channel-style CGI-monster crapfest. We crowded around the TV, claws unsheathed, ready to have a blast tearing this terrible piece of shit to tiny shreds. Sadly we ended up disappointed.
You see, it ended up being good. Even very good.
