I enjoy stories that focus on the fringes of society; those on the peripheral. Mountain folk, hillbillies, backwoods, whatever you want to call them: people that keep their own counsel, make their own (sometimes sinister) rules and live just outside our expectations.
Nobody tells the truth like “The Onion”
Personally I’m approaching 450 reviews at DepressedPress. While I’m still far from a professional reviewer, I can definitely commiserate.

Ken (Brendan Gleeson [IMDB]) and his protegé Ray (Colin Farrell [IMDB]) are hit men. When Ray’s first job goes horribly pear-shaped, Harry (Ralph Fiennes [IMDB]), their viscious boss, sends them to Bruges, Belgium to get them out of the way for a while. The worldly Ken looks forward to some down time in a quiet town filled with classic art, medieval architecture and fine food. The immature Ray can’t stand the thought of it.

This Australian comedy follows two teens as they graduate high school and decide how to move forward in life. Placid Lake (Ben Lee [IMDB]) is the smart – and smartass – son of Bohemians. Bullied at school and unable to apply his parent’s impractical spiritual advice (it really didn’t help that his mother sent him to primary school in a dress to “challenge expectations of sexuality), he ends up in traction.
My son, who’s much more into the Wii U than I am, is trying his hand at blogging and has started with Mario Kart 8. Why not give him a visit and see what the target audience thinks?

Why the hell not watch this today? You think it’s some kind of cliché? Something that displays a lack of imagination? Well, what the hell are you watching, if you’re so smart? Some kind of weird foreign movie with a smart script, interesting story and no explosions?

So, Steve Coogan [IMDB] and Rob Brydon [IMDB] wanted to do a movie. They wanted it to highlight their personal senses of humor, outlooks on life and love and maybe allow them to do some impressions. So, they tossed around some scripts, played with some genres, but nothing seemed to gel.

Cheerleaders can be bitchy, sometimes. Jocks can be violent, sometimes. Goths can be creepy, sometimes. Bitchy cheerleaders are killed by violent jocks and are raised from the dead by creepy goths and become flesh-eating demons, sometimes.
Sci-fi/Action, 117 Minutes, 2014
You can’t review this movie without comparing it to the classic 1987 original [IMDB]. Directed by Paul Verhoeven [IMDB], the original was a brutally violent action flick that hid a disturbingly snarky satirical commentary on modern society (a formula he would leverage again 10 years later in “Starship Troopers” [IMDB]). This reboot? Well, it’s very pretty.
