Movie Review: Red 2

IMDB, RED 2“RED 2” on IMDB

Action, 116 Minutes, 2013

I’m a big fan of the original “Red” [IMDB] and, in general, of everybody involved with it. The comics are pretty damn sweet too. For those that don’t know, the story revolves around Frank Moss (played by Bruce Willis [IMDB]) a former CIA operative marked “RED” for “Retired: Extremely Dangerous”. The first movie covered how Frank met the love of his life, Sarah (Mary-Louise Parker [IMDB]), got his old team together and foiled a conspiracy that reached to the highest levels of government.

It was pretty great.

Movie Review: White House Down

IMDB, White House Down“White House Down” on IMDB

Action, 131 Minutes, 2013

Straight from the “Die Hard” [IMDB] home kit comes this story of a struggling everyman whose dream is becoming a secret service agent to impress his precocious, politics obsessed daughter. When the White House is attacked by a team of terrorists (white terrorists, you racist) he teams up with the action, kung-fu grip president and gets the job done!

Movie Review: Elysium

IMDB, Elysium“Elysium” on IMDB

Sci-fi, 109 Minutes, 2013

This is writer/director Neill Blomkamp’s [IMDB] highly anticipated follow-up to his surprise 2009 hit, “District 9” [IMDB]. While vastly different in tone and scope the two films share a distinctive feel. With a few script changes they may have quite believably been set in the same timeline. There’s a closeness, an immediacy, to the direction and staging that permeates everything.

Movie Review: R.I.P.D

IMDB, RIPD“R.I.P.D.” on IMDB

Action/Comedy, 96 Minutes, 2013

What if the “Men in Black” [IMDB] hunted ghosts instead of aliens?  That’s the movie in a nutshell. Not at all original, but also not a bad idea, really.  The agents, here, are dead themselves and doing community service on Earth before being allowed into Heaven.  The fugitive ghosts hiding among us need to be found and revealed so that they can be put down for good.

Movie Review: Dredd

IMDB, Dredd“Dredd” on IMDB

Action, 95 Minutes, 2013:

The original attempt at capturing “Britain’s Number One Comic Hero”, 1995’s “Judge Dredd” [IMDB] was, let’s be honest, not a terrible movie.  It was a bit ham-fisted and trite but also had a decent story, some great design work and lots of action.  It was not, however, a good Judge Dredd movie.  It tried, lord knows it tried.  In the final judgement (get it?!) it just didn’t capture the character very well.  While some fans considered the removal of the character’s helmet pure sacrilege the issues went deeper than that.  The movie ended up too light, to uneven and just plain too Hollywood.

Movie Review: The Lone Ranger

IMDB, The Lone Ranger“The Lone Ranger” on IMDB

Action/Drama, 149 Minutes, 2013

As a big fan of both classic serialized heroes and westerns, I was actually looking forward to this quite a bit.  Sure, I may have been the only one, but I thought that it would at least be a nice, meaningless, popcorn lark.  Something well-done, over-the-top and forgettable.

But then they had to go and throw in all that genocide.

Movie Review: Iron Man 3

IMDB, Iron Man 3“Iron Man 3” on IMDB

Action, 130 Minutes, 2013

[By way of explanation, this review was written on Sept 19.  I may have also sent the spellchecker into a neurotic spiral of depression.]

Ahoy, maties!  This be the third picture show in the “Iron Man” series.  Comin’ in the roiling wake of “The Avengers” [IMDB] it struggles like a drunkin’ tar heaved overboard.  Our rum-soaked sea-dog, Tony Stark, is now bedeviled by panic attacks, insomnia and insecurity after saving the whole of the seven seas from an alien boarding party in New York.

Movie Review: Olympus Has Fallen

IMDB, Olympus Has Fallen“Olympus Has Fallen” on IMDB

Action, 120 Minutes, 2013

This is one of those “worst case” scenario movies that Hollywood loves.  Take something that couldn’t really happen – in this case a military invasion of the White House – then figure out a way it could.  You have to, you know, ignore some meddlesome facts along the way but it can make for a fun movie.  (As is often the case multiple people seemed to have the same idea which is why we got “White House Down” [IMDB] a few months later.)
