Movie Review: The Bannon Way

“The Bannon Way” on IMDB

Crime/Comedy, 93 Minutes, 2010

My brother suggested I watch this and when a movie has a better-than-average chance of being good I like to wait and watch with my lovely bride (who has less patience for schlock that I do).  So tonight we sat down and enjoyed this.

Movie Review: Your Highness

“Your Highness” on IMDB

Comedy, 102 Minutes, 2011

This is one of those movies that simply over-stays its welcome.  You will laugh – at least a little.  But a royal, fantasy prince saying “fuck” is only funny once… maybe twice.  Here you get it about 148 times.  That minotaur dick joke was mildly funny.  Missed it?  Don’t worry, it’ll get referenced 20 more times.

Movie Review: Bad Teacher

“Bad Teacher” on IMDB

Comedy, 92 Minutes, 2011:

Despite a surprisingly convincing performance by Cameron Diaz as a complete bitch the movie just ends up falling flat.  There are definitely some giggles and it’s not completely unenjoyable but despite a sometimes valiant struggle it simply doesn’t reach its potential.

Movie Review: Paul

“Paul”  on IMDB

Action, 114 Minutes, 2011

I deeply, truly enjoyed this.  Basically it seems that every few years Simon Pegg and Nick Frost give us a classic comedy.  Of course “Sean of the Dead” is still (and will probably always remain) the pinnacle of their work, but “Paul” definitely shoves “Hot Fuzz” to the bottom of the heap.

Movie Review: Hall Pass

“Hall Pass” on IMDB

Comedy, 105 Minutes, 2011

Hall Pass is the latest in the long line of formula, raunchy, over-the-top comedies.  Take some likable people, place them in a ridiculous situation toss in some toilet humor, work up to a crisis and end with a melodramatic sequence to prove that the movie has a heart.

Movie Review: That’s What I Am

“That’s What I Am” on IMDB

Comedy, 101 Minutes, 2011

My wife enjoyed this more than I did – by a fairly large margin so take that for what it’s worth.  It’s not that I didn’t like the film it’s simply that I thought it was being a little lazy at times and a little scatter-brained at others.  It really didn’t know what story it wanted to tell (so it tried to tell them all) or how it wanted to tell it.

Movie Review: The Switch

“The Switch” on IMDB

Romantic Comedy, 101 Minutes, 2010

Meh.

This is the same basic, cookie-cutter, rom-com recipe that seems to draw Jennifer Aniston in like a fly to honey.  Jason Bateman’s career hasn’t been doing nearly as well as his talent deserves so he can be forgiven nearly any sin at this point, but Aniston is really driving herself into a nice, comfortable, completely unchallenging rut.

Movie Review: The Green Hornet

“The Green Hornet” on IMDB

Action/Comedy, 119 Minutes, 2011

I really (REALLY) wanted to like this.  In the end I just couldn’t.

I’m not sure why but more often than not Seth Rogen just has this ability to drain the joy out of things.  I noticed it first and most dramatically in “Observe and Report” but also in “Funny People” and “Zach and Miri Make a Porno“.  It’s odd because I actually would say, if asked, that I’m a fan of his.  I like that he pushes the envelope; that he doesn’t go for the easy laughs.  But just as often as this works, it fails and sometimes spectacularly so.

Movie Review: Punching the Clown

“Punching the Clown” on IMDB

Comedy, 91 Minutes, 2009

Loved this.

The “mockumentary” style has been a little overdone lately but this is nicely refreshing and has some genuine, laugh-out-loud moments.   It’s far from perfect but it has a depth that allows it to overcome its problems.  In all the best ways this reminds me of genre classics like “Best in Show” or “Comic Book: The Movie”.
