A plane is taking off. It’s the last plane being allowed to leave England headed to New York before a massive tropical storm hits. Instead of being absolutely packed to the brim with people bumped from later flights, it’s nearly empty. Only a handful of people are on board. This is, by far, the most fantastic thing that happens in this movie.

Apparently the idea for this movie was the result of an extended discussion on writer/director Kevin Smith’s [IMDB] podcast. How about a guy, the joke went, that captures people and tries to turn them into walruses? The gag picked up steam, Smith got excited and made a movie.

Oh smart horror, how I love you! You creepy, demented thing getting all up in my brain and making me think! Smart horror is always in short supply, so when it make an appearance, fans should always pay attention.

Stop me if you’ve heard this one: a group of attractive teens decide to explore an old haunted mine on Halloween. You’ve heard it? Wait tho’: in this case something goes horribly wrong! Oh, still heard it?

This movie was clearly aiming for some kind of artistic statement on the juxtaposition of sensuality and violence. The excellent posters, in the design of classic pin-up fantasy girls, probably got more attention than movie itself, which turned out to be much more a mixed bag.
Video game movies tend to be, to put things mildly, terrible. Generally, they’re rushed, low-budget, self-indulgent compromises. They’re incredibly adept at discovering exactly which elements makes people adore the game and then ignoring them completely. Like anything else, there are exceptions, but as a rule: run away from video game movies.

Marc Singer’s [IMDB] looking for a new house along with his bitchy girlfriend and his annoying daughter (who hates his bitchy girlfriend). When approached by a stranger who suggests that he check out a house just left of the ass-end of nowhere, he decides, “why not?” On the way up they meet another family, headed by the versatile Art LaFleur [IMDB], looking for the same house.
