Movie Review: The Maze Runner

“The Maze Runner” on IMDB IMDB, The Maze Runner

Action/Sci-Fi, 113 Minutes, 2014

Hey teenage girls, we turned one of those young-adult fiction books you seem to like so much into a movie! We crammed in a whole variety pack of 20-something heart-throbs you can pretend are in their teens! We’ll have posters for sale and everything!

Movie Review: Nurse 3D

IMDB, Nurse 3D“Nurse 3D” on IMDB

Horror, 84 Minutes, 2013

This movie was clearly aiming for some kind of artistic statement on the juxtaposition of sensuality and violence. The excellent posters, in the design of classic pin-up fantasy girls, probably got more attention than movie itself, which turned out to be much more a mixed bag.

Movie Review: Lucy

IMDB, Lucy“Lucy” on IMDB

Action/Sci-Fi, 89 Minutes, 2014

I told you, Hollywood, all the way back in 2011, when I saw “Limitless” [my review]: stop saying that we only use 10% of our brains! I’m warning you! It was wrong and stupid then and it’s wrong and stupid now. Now one of my favorite directors, Luc Besson [IMDB], goes and bases an entire movie on it.

Movie Review: The Other Woman

IMDB, The Other Woman“The Other Woman” on IMDB

Comedy, 109 Minutes, 2014

I’m having difficulty reviewing this one. I can’t honestly say where I fall on it. It’s probably damning with faint praise to say that it’s absolutely harmless. It is true, however: this movie will not harm you or your family in any way.

Movie Review: A Trio of Video Game Flicks

Video Game Movies, PS3 ControllerVideo game movies tend to be, to put things mildly, terrible. Generally, they’re rushed, low-budget, self-indulgent compromises. They’re incredibly adept at discovering exactly which elements makes people adore the game and then ignoring them completely. Like anything else, there are exceptions, but as a rule: run away from video game movies.

Movie Review: The Wolverine

IMDB, The Wolverine“The Wolverine” on IMDB

Adventure, 126 Minutes, 2013

I lost track of the “X-Men” movies some time ago. The overblown “X-Men: The Last Stand” [IMDB] and oddly paced  “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” were decent, but seemed to represent a downward spiral from the first two films. The excellent semi-reboot “X-Men: First Class” [IMDB] seemed to distance itself from the earlier films.

Movie Review: 22 Jump Street

IMDB, 22 Jump Street“22 Jump Steet” on IMDB

Comedy, 112 Minutes, 2014

This movie is so tongue-in-cheek introspective it hurts. Fourth-wall breaks, self-commentary and an almost supernatural self-awareness account for a huge percentage of the humor. This is a sequel, and it reminds you of that loudly, blatantly and often.

Movie Review: Saving Mr Banks

IMDB, Saving Mr Banks“Saving Mr Banks” on IMDB

Biography/Comedy/Drama, 125 Minutes, 2013

Mary Poppins [IMDB] is one of the very few inarguable classics of film. Even those curmudgeons that mock Dick Van Dyke’s [IMDB] cockney accent admit it. The story behind the making of the film is the stuff of Hollywood legend.

Movie Review: Let’s be Cops

IMDB, Lets be Cops“Let’s be Cops” on IMDB

Comedy, 104 Minutes, 2014

This is a formulaic, by-the-numbers, utterly predictable, totally forgettable buddy-cop comedy. The characters are clichéd. So are their problems and the solutions they pursue. Still, for all that, it’s pretty damn funny.

Movie Review: House Hunting

IMDB, House Hunting“House Hunting” on IMDB

Horror/Thriller, 102 Minutes, 2013

Marc Singer’s [IMDB] looking for a new house along with his bitchy girlfriend and his annoying daughter (who hates his bitchy girlfriend). When approached by a stranger who suggests that he check out a house just left of the ass-end of nowhere, he decides, “why not?” On the way up they meet another family, headed by the versatile Art LaFleur [IMDB], looking for the same house.
