Whenever a traditionally comedic actor (especially a traditionally gonzo, off-the-wall comedic character actor) moves into more serious things I always think that there must at least one poor schmuck that just saw the name on the marquee/box and grabbed it because they really, really needed a laugh.  Maybe he had just found out something horrible and needed to take his mind off it; maybe all of life’s normal, tiny horrible things just piled up on him and he just needed one break.

Movie Review: Super

“Super” on IMDB

Drama/Comedy, 96 Minutes, 2010:

This is an incredible film if you’re able to accept it.  If there’s a problem with it (and there isn’t) it’s that it assumes a lot of its audience.  So if you think there’s a problem with it (you’re wrong) then it’s really just you.  My guess is that you’re an idiot.  That’s really nothing to be ashamed of – lots of people are – but you may not enjoy this movie.  Everybody else: you’re in for a treat.

Movie Review: Cargo

“Cargo” on IMDB

Sci-Fi/Thriller, 112 Minutes, 2009

Cargo is a rich, stylish sci-fi thriller in the vein of “Sunshine”, “Moon” or “Solaris”.  The first half of the movie is as good as the genre gets.  All the elements are there: a close-knit crew dealing with strangers, a huge ship with a mysterious secret and a dangerous, unexpected development.

Movie Review: Mirrormask

I took my lovely bride on a date and saw “Mirrormask” at the local art house (which in our case has better screens and seating than most megaplexes).

The film is written by Neil Gaiman and Dave McKean (if you don’t know who they are… well, you should), directed by McKean (his directorial debut) and features effects by the Jim Henson Company.
