Many of our participants have YouTube Channels of their own. Why not give them a look?

Thanks to all that participated for another great year!

Extra Life 2017 Marathon is Go!

Extra-Life LogoThe Extra-Life 2017 Marathon has started! This is our team’s, the Vidiots, fourth year of participation. We’re only two hours into the event and we stand at $467 in donations!

Since 2008 Extra Life has raised over $30 Million for children. We welcome your donations!

We decided to “keep it simple” this year. By “we”, I mean “me”, since we’ve been overrun by multiple full gaming rigs, multiple TVs, many new and classic consoles and hundreds of feet of wire.

We’re not really “organized”, but for now at least, you can catch a stream of some of the goings on at Kodyurem on YouTube, the channel of one of our team members.

Let us know if there’s something you’d like to see!

Extra Life 2017 Marathon is November 4!

Extra-Life LogoThe Extra-Life 2017 Marathon is less than three weeks away! November 4th will mark our team, the Vidiots, fourth year of participation. In that time our team has raised over $2,000 to benefit Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals.

Since 2008 Extra Life has raised over $30 Million for children. We welcome your donations and invite you to join our team if you’re so inclined!

We’ve got a PS4, a PS3, a small cabal of Nintendo Switches and an eager gaggle of classic 16-bit systems. We’ve got a tower of board and card games and Our Steam Link is ready to bring PC games to our TV and a proud, lonely PlayStation Vita stands united with a short-stack of Nintendo DS’s for private play. Controllers are charged and stacked like cordwood. Plentiful snacks are at hand! Caffeinated beverages are standing by!

Folks. We. Are. Ready!

Extra Life 2016 Marathon: Wrap up!

A Depressed Press SeriesPart 3 of 3 of Extra Life 2016

Extra-Life LogoOur Extra-Life 2016 Marathon is over! All told, with various breaks for jobs, prior engagements and at least one scheduled SAT exam, we had involvement from nearly twenty people and raised $873.55 to help sick kids!

Although the marathon is over, you can still donate, if you like! Please click on a team member to do so!

This year was more subdued than previous years, yet still a blast.

We want to thank everybody that helped with this and hope to see them all next year!

Extra-Life LogoWe’re about four hours into our Extra-Life 2016 Marathon! There will be some drop-ins later, but we’ve squeezed 16 people into our home and raised over $800 so far!

You can still donate, if you like! Please click on a team member to do so! We’ve playing a lot of classic console games, portable games and board games. There was also an odd digression into completing somebody’s engineering homework…

Extra Life 2016 Marathon: The Calm before the Storm!

A Depressed Press SeriesPart 1 of 3 of Extra Life 2016

Extra-Life LogoWe’re getting ready to kick off our Extra-Life 2016 Marathon! In a little over 12 hours we will be invaded by over a dozen teenagers. They will fill our humble home with the sights, sounds and smells (oh when do the smells stop?!) of charity! And gaming. Lots of gaming.

Our team have currently raised $634 for sick kids. You can still donate, if you like (please click on a team member to donate!) – we can always use more sick kids; they’re so inspiring!

Things got a little weird at the 23rd hour last year:

We’ve got a PS4, a PS3, a Wii-U, a regular-old Wii and an impressive tower of board, card and dice games. Our Steam Link is ready to bring PC games to our TV and a proud, lonely PlayStation Vita stands united with a short-stack of Nintendo DS’s for private play. Controllers are charged and stacked like cordwood. Plentiful snacks are at hand! Caffeinated beverages are standing by!

Uncharted 4 Lasting Impressions

A Depressed Press SeriesPart 3 of 3 of Uncharted 4

Uncharted4 CoverAfter my initial disappointment and mid-game thrills with Uncharted 4, I completed the game. Having let the experience sit for a couple of weeks and allowing the adrenaline to fade, I can say without exaggeration:

Best. Game. Ever.

I’ve never experienced a better meshing of character, story, setting and gameplay. Others have come close and even surpassed it in one or more areas. “Mass Effect” had greater depth, but the ending marred the experience. The “BioShock” games brought the drama, but lacked the longevity and depth. Lara Croft may be responsible for some great experiences, but failed to ever show any real growth as a character.

This brought everything together.

Uncharted 4 First (and Second) Impressions

A Depressed Press SeriesPart 2 of 3 of Uncharted 4

Uncharted4 CoverAfter my initial disappointment with Uncharted 4’s gi-freakin’-normous day one patch, I was actually able to play it. Since Tuesday, I’ve been able to put something over ten hours into the title and have reached Chapter 12 (of 22). Yes, I’m a 45 year-old man who took a vacation day from work to play a video game. I’m a growed-up and I wanna find pirate treasure, dammit!

In a fit of hubris, having earned Platinum trophies for the three previous games, I decided to start the game on “Crushing” difficulty. Having spent the last two hours failing to progress, I’m beginning to feel that this may have been a mistake.

Uncharted 4 First Impressions (Sorta)

A Depressed Press SeriesPart 1 of 3 of Uncharted 4

Uncharted 4 Collector's EditionLike many others, I took delivery of Uncharted 4 today. I got home from work, unpacked the very impressive Nathan Drake collectible statue, took a picture or two and sat down to dinner.

The collector’s set is very large, but rather sparse. The statue is the centerpiece and, at over a foot tall, towers over similar pack-ins from other games. The game, in a steel case, a small hardcover art book, some stickers and a small load of downloadable multi-player goodies are also included. It pales in comparison to the cornucopia of trinkets in the Uncharted 3 collector’s editions, but hey, it is a very impressive statue!

Extra Life 2015: 10am and We’re Done!

A Depressed Press SeriesPart 15 of 15 of Extra Life 2015

Extra-Life LogoI’m not-live blogging our Extra-Life 2015 Marathon! Our team, The Vidiots, is done! 24 hours of gaming, goofing and doing good by sick kids!

We lost about half the team before the end, but enough of us made it we’re counting this a solid, if groggy, victory! As we approached the end, some of the punch drunk – but still conscious! – team members decided to celebrate with song.

Thanks to my lovely bride who went above and beyond to help us pull this off and all of my team members. We didn’t meet our fundraising goal, but still raised $393 to help the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals!
