Movie Review: The Incredible Burt Wonderstone

I have no idea what happened here.  The cast was amazing: Steve Carell [IMDB], Steve Buscemi [IMDB], Olivia Wilde [IMDB], Jim Carrey [IMDB], James Gandolfini [IMDB] in one of his last roles, and Alan Arkin [IMDB].  Director Don Scardino [IMDB] may be new to feature films, but he has had an incredible presence in television.  How could this fail?!

I don’t know; but it did.

Movie Review: The Immaculate Conception of Little Dizzle

Comedy, 98 Minutes, 2009

At the risk of starting out with a spoiler: this is a movie about little, blue butt-fish.  It may, indeed, be about more than that but what will stick with you and what you’ll talk about with people that haven’t seen it is little, blue butt-fish.  This may be considered, in fact, the official anthem movie for little, blue butt-fish.

Movie Review: Pitch Perfect

Comedy/Musical, 112 Minutes, 2012

My 10-year old daughter begged to watch this movie about a cappella singing.  Why not?  The movie lets us know that a cappella singing is the coolest God-damndest thing in the entire world!  If you could smoosh extreme cliff-diving, lion-taming and sex into one glistening ball of awesome you might approach how cool a cappella singing is.  For my part I immediately shoved the movie into the corner of my brain where anything I’ve ever seen about “Glee” goes to wither and die painfully.

Why did I end up liking it so much?

Movie Review: Noobz

IMDB, Noobz“Noobz” on IMDB

Comedy, 97 Minutes, 2012

This is sorta, kinda, almost a remake of “The Wizard” [IMDB].  Like that weird little classic a group of friends, in this case a “Gears of War 3” clan, go cross-country to compete in a giant video-game championship.  The major difference is that the main characters here are thirty-something slackers.  The main similarity is that they, also, really don’t seem to know much about gaming.

Movie Review: Wreck-it Ralph

IMDB, Wreck-it Ralph“Wreck-it Ralph” on IMDB

Fantasy, 108 Minutes, 2012

This movie aspires to be nothing less than the “Toy Story” [IMDB] of the video game generation.  It has the same “your playthings have private lives when you leave” theme.  It also features similar “new v. old” and “respect v. apathy” plotlines.  Finally it populates its world with a mixture of classic characters and original characters that fit classic archetypes.  The arrogance!  The audacity!  The cheek!

Damn if it doesn’t (almost) do it.
