Movie Review: The Sitter

“The Sitter” on IMDB

Comedy,  81 Minutes, 2012

I love “Inept adults taking care of precocious children” movies.  “Uncle Buck” [IMDB] is a highlight of both John Hughes and John Candy’s careers.  “Adventures in Babysitting” [IMDB] is one of those movies that you always linger on when flipping through channels.  It’s a good formula.  I also like Jonah Hill [IMDB] a lot.

Movie Review: The Campaign

“The Campaign” on IMDB

Will Ferrell [IMDB] and Zach Galifianakis [IMDB] are two great tastes that clearly taste great together.  I would unreservedly call both of them geniuses (although, like all geniuses they’re not always successful).  Both of them (especially Galifianakis) often rely on deadpan, experimental comedy that can turn off some viewers but this is  refreshingly open and laugh-out-loud funny.

Movie Review: The Babymakers

“The Babymakers” on IMDB

Comedy,  95 Minutes, 2012

The basic idea here is that this guy has been hit in the balls so much that his “sperm are bad” but he’d still like to impregnate his wife.  He remembers that he used to donate sperm all the time and tries to get retrieve some of that but he finds out his last batch has been sold and will be used soon!  So he collects his stereotypical group friends – the fat crazy one, the dumb one and black one – and plans a sperm heist.

Movie Review: Dark Shadows

“Dark Shadows” on IMDB

Fantasy,  113 Minutes, 2012

I think I had some trouble with this one because the trailers all prepared me (very well!) for a light-hearted fish-out-water (or, more specifically, a vampire-out-of-time) story decorated with some gothic trim.  Instead we get an almost completely deadpan melodramatic horror-themed love story more befitting the film’s soap-opera roots.

Movie Review: Bringing Up Bobby

“Bringing Up Bobby” on IMDB

Comedy,  93 Minutes, 2011

Famke Jansen [IMDB] has a hell of lot riding on this.  This is her writing, directing and producing debut. The story is rather basic.  A mother,  Milla Jovovich [IMDB], is raising her son, Bobby, on the road and trying to escape her con artist past.  When she can’t outrun it any longer and ends up in prison her son is taken care of by a friendly couple (Bill Pullman [IMDB] and Marcia Cross [IMDB]) still reeling from the loss of their own child.

What do you when Alan Alda [IMDB] screws you (and I mean screws you bad)?  Well you put together a completely inept crew to break into one of the most secure buildings in the world and steal from him.  You know, people who mentioned that they might know how to do things or other people who you barely know and wouldn’t trust with your neighbor’s cat.  Those people.  Collect them into a room and tell them all about how you plan to steal 20 million dollars.

Movie Review: Men in Black 3

“Men in Black 3” on IMDB

Sci-fi/Comedy,  110 Minutes, 2012

The original “Men in Black” [IMDB] has always been one of my favorite movies.  It was irreverent, bombastic and populated with insanely likable characters.  (It was also based on a comic book – so if you liked it too maybe you should bolster the flagging comic book industry and buy some?)  The effects were bright, innovative and wonderfully cartoonish in all the right ways.  Most of all it was just plain fun.

Movie Review: Revenge of the Bridesmaids

“Revenge of the Bridesmaids” on IMDB

Comedy,  95 Minutes, 2010

This is a made-for-TV movie.  I didn’t realize that at the beginning and probably wouldn’t have considered it if I’d known but my wife likes rom-coms (no matter how stupid) and I thought she’d like it.  It looked a little off (I assume this was shot on video).  It really started to dawn on me when about 30 minutes into the movie I hadn’t heard a single “shit” or “ass”.
