Action, 120 Minutes, 2013
This is one of those “worst case” scenario movies that Hollywood loves. Take something that couldn’t really happen – in this case a military invasion of the White House – then figure out a way it could. You have to, you know, ignore some meddlesome facts along the way but it can make for a fun movie. (As is often the case multiple people seemed to have the same idea which is why we got “White House Down” [IMDB] a few months later.)

This should have been my kind of movie. A hot Japanese, 400-year old, half-demon school-girl hunting evil demons with a sword in the age of disco – how could it go wrong? Apparently in a quite a few ways, although I did enjoy it overall.
Family/Adventure, 102 Minutes, 2013
This was fine, really. Just fine. The animation is nice. The story is simple enough. It has Chris O’Dowd [IMDB] in it; he makes everything better. There’s funny sidekicks, lots of action, a nasty little villain and love story light on the kissy-face.
It’s just fine. Not quite, you know, “epic”, but really, just fine.

Having watched “Oblivion” [Our Review], a movie that breeds comparisons to this one despite having only tenuous similarities, I decided that it was time that my lovely bride see it.

Sci-fi, 124 Minutes, 2013
This is a good sci-fi movie. Tom Cruise [IMDB] is still good enough to make you forget that he’s pants-crapping crazy. Morgan Freeman [IMDB] is Morgan Freeman. The effects are gorgeous. The pacing is effective and the cinematography stunning.
It’s a good movie. You’ll enjoy it. Are we clear on that? Good, because the movie was also really fucking stupid.
Historical Drama, 122 Minutes, 2009
Since we covered “Lincoln” [our review] recently this seemed like a reasonable follow-up. The movie covers the trial of Mary Surratt, the lone woman accused of conspiring to assassinate Abraham Lincoln.
Historical Drama, 150 Minutes, 2012:
This is an excellent historical drama. There are some amazing performances, notably by Daniel Day-Lewis [IMDB] and Tommy Lee Jones [IMDB]. Focusing almost exclusively on the little understood, but intensely interesting, fight to pass the 13th amendment it’s a movie that every American should watch and understand.

The tagline for this one is “You Think You Know Vampires? Think Again.” I’m not sure if that’s a dig at sparkly vampires or not but these vampires, here? Pretty damn average if you ask me.
Comedy, 94 Minutes, 2013
Movies like this collect well-known celebrities and, probably by intimating that they lack of a sense of humor if they won’t, convince them to spend a day or two creating often raunchy, but generally below average, short comedy films. These are then thrown together with a loose wrapper story and tossed out to the public.
