Movie Review: The Dilemma

“The Dilemma” on IMDB

Drama (not a Comedy), 111 Minutes, 2011:

I think my big problem with this is that I sat down to a comedy.  But this isn’t a comedy.  It’s a drama.  The marketing machine that decided to present this in trailers and commercials as a comedy did the film a disservice because people going in expecting to laugh (like I did) are going to be confused and quite possibly pissed off.  It’s a drama.  Oh, to be sure you’ll get some chuckles out of it but it’s a drama.

Movie Review: The Last Castle

“The Last Castle” on IMDB

Action,  131 Minutes, 2001:

You know who makes crappy movies?  Truly terrible, criminally awful movies?  Robert Redford [IMDB], that’s who!  Bad plots, bad scripts, bad acting!  All of his movies almost without exception are pure and utter crap!  They’re pure drivel without any social value or redemptive quality of any kind!  His movies can only appeal to the most debased frat-boy mentality!

Movie Review: Bringing Up Bobby

“Bringing Up Bobby” on IMDB

Comedy,  93 Minutes, 2011

Famke Jansen [IMDB] has a hell of lot riding on this.  This is her writing, directing and producing debut. The story is rather basic.  A mother,  Milla Jovovich [IMDB], is raising her son, Bobby, on the road and trying to escape her con artist past.  When she can’t outrun it any longer and ends up in prison her son is taken care of by a friendly couple (Bill Pullman [IMDB] and Marcia Cross [IMDB]) still reeling from the loss of their own child.

Movie Review: The Descendants

“The Descendents” on IMDB

Drama,  115 Minutes, 2011

This is one of those dramatic comedies where the name of the movie is based upon the least interesting thread of the plot.  In this case the King family has owned a huge, never-developed, pristine chunk of Kauai worth hundreds of millions for over 150 years.  The trust on the land will be running out in a few years and the family has decided to cash in.

Movie Review: The First Grader

“The First Grader” on IMDB

Biography/Drama,  103 Minutes, 2010:

I honestly know very little about the Kenyan revolution (or Kenya in general actually).  Like most “true stories” it’s very difficult to parse what’s being presented as actual truth.  Some things are just so terrible that you hope fervently that they just can’t be true.  The message of the movie concerns the unbreakable nature of the human spirit but the lesson that you’ll probably come away with, just as I did, is this:

Movie Review: Precious

“Precious” on IMDB

Drama,  110 Minutes, 2009

I don’t often review dramas (or really good movies for that matter).  Dramas are tiring and emotionally draining and lack the explosions and bad special effects that have come to be recognized as signs of “Dad’s movies” in my home.  However my wife feels differently.  She loves those weepy, drippy tear-jerkers!  So, with high expectations and she with a box of tissues we sat down to watch this acclaimed drama.

Movie Review: The Dish and the Spoon

“The Dish and the Spoon” on IMDB

Comedy,  90 Minutes, 2011

I’m talking now to all the ladies in the audience.  You know how it is when you’re husband cheats on you with a yoga instructor from your home town and then you drive all night with no money to find her and kill her?  But then you decide to take a six-pack up to the beach tower and find a british kid up there?  So you take him to your parent’s beach house, steal from him, dress him in drag, show him your funeral plot and let him touch your boob?  You all know how that goes, right ladies?
