My son is at the videos again. This is a bit late, but here’s his 2014 games in review.
He’s got others – which I’ll likely post late as well – but that shouldn’t stop you from taking a look and subscribing.

Well, we failed with our Extra-Life 2014 Marathon. Our team, the Vidiots, (feel free to donate) were able to make it most of the way but hit a wall in the 18th hour.
Although our team failed to stay awake, many others didn’t. The grand total as off 8am this morning was over five-million dollars raised, smashing the record from last year handily.
As much fun as we were having, we still couldn’t quite make it all the way. People started dropping off in ones and twos until there was nobody left.
All told, even though we didn’t meet our goal, I consider this a success. Our team was thrown together at the last minute and the event was sandwiched in the middle of what’s turning out to be a very challenging school year. We raised a little money, blew off a lot of steam and gave us an excuse to finally clean the living room.
We enter the last quarter of our Extra-Life 2014 Marathon with our team the Vidiots (feel free to donate). As we enter our 14th hours it’s clear folks are starting to flag, but second winds seem to incoming.
Since the last update:
Six more hours. Six more hours!

We’re likely to lose people off-and-on from this point out. 10 hours left and I know I’m already feeling it.
We kicked off our Extra-Life 2014 Marathon, with our last-minute attempt at a team – the Vidiots (feel free to donate) – about eight hours ago. I had planned on making regular updates, but I’m having too damn much fun, so shoot me.
The entire event – thanks almost entirely to the $115 our team has contributed – has raised nearly four million dollars so far and shows no sign of slowing. The strength and determination of sick kids is amazing, and this money will go to ensure that there are even more sick kids around to inspire us all!
The line-up so far as been pretty eclectic:
(I’ve been informed that I may have missed the point of the fund-raiser. I don’t think so.)
“The Last of Us” [My Review] is, rightfully, being lauded as one of the best games of 2013. It provides mature gamers a tight, immersive gameplay experience framed in a smart and engaging story. It also handily demonstrates the high quality that can be wrung from seven year-old hardware. I enjoyed the game deeply but, as is often the case with something so close to perfection, small issues take on significantly more weight.

Rated “M” for Mature.
20 years after a pandemic fungal infection has wiped out civilization and created a feral hunter-class of infected, humanity lives on the edge. Rigidly controlled but exquisitely vulnerable quarantine zones represent the last of organized government. People get along as best they can under constant threat from sickness, starvation and their fellow survivors.
In celebration of the release of the Playstaion 4 the PlayStation Greatness Exchange is giving away all of the props from the excellent “A Perfect Day” commercial (below). In what is a certified stroke of marketing genius this is the second contest which has allowed fans to leverage their PSN Trophy collection to win actual prizes.
(Yes, my PSN handle is “kiwidust”. Feel free to ping me if you catch me online. Apologies in advance: I rarely do multi-player due to the enormous, towering, stack of unplayed games looming over me.)
I tossed my lot of trophies on the Elder Scrolls Online Dagger and…. please provide your own drumrolls, I won! I haven’t actually taken delivery yet (who know how long that will take) but I’m already in negotiations with my lovely bride on how (and where) to mount and display it. Here’s a few close-ups of the piece provided by PlayStation:
Here’s the commercial. You can see the dagger in the first few seconds being drawn for combat by the thiefy-looking guy on the right. He better not have scratched my dagger!
Once I take official ownership, I’ll be sure to gloat some more!
If you care about video gaming at all you’re probably already familiar with the recent announcements by Microsoft and Sony. Despite that fact that both of these systems were introduced earlier I wanted to wait to until after the E3 Press Conferences to get a broader picture before I weighed in. With exciting shows from both companies on Monday the stories are likely as clear as they’re going to be until the actual launch. Before diving in however let me give you a little background on my current gen experience.
