This was a really mixed bag. There’s a lot of laughs but a lot of them are too easy and cheap as hell. There are some fun performances and also some downright awful ones. The story rolls well for most of the movie then plummets to one of the worst endings I’ve ever seen.

The poster proudly proclaims that this is from the makers of “Notting Hill” and “Love, Actually”. Aside from the fact that is set in New York rather than London the pedigree is strong. If you liked those films (and why wouldn’t you? they were both great) then you’ll probably like this one.

I feel, in the interest of full disclosure, that I must admit a bias here. I adore Jenna Fischer. Really, what’s not to like? She’s smart, talented, hot and infectiously joyful (although this is a drama and she’s not really ever happy in it).
Thriller, 88 Minutes, 2011
This is Kevin Smith’s first attempt at a straight-up, no-nonsense drama. As a drama it succeeds in spades; there’s no joy of any kind in this story. The film will leave you feeling unclean and unsettled – which seems to be the intent – but unfortunately doesn’t have much staying power.

Like most sequels, if you like the first you’ll probably like this. Also like most sequels there’s a very good chance that you won’t like this as much.

Did you see the first two movies? If so, you know that you are in for at least two things. Firstly, you’ll get some mind-blowing special effects. Jaw-droppingly intricate effects. Effects that will make you want to cheer. Secondly, you’ll get an almost completely incomprehensible story. A bloated, hackneyed tumor of a story.

Stop me if you’ve heard this before: a self-conscious, akward guy goes after an incredibly hot girl far outside his class (who, coincidentally, is also kind of a jerk). To accomplish this he recruits his hollywood-plain (read: incredibly hot with glasses) friend to help. Although he eventually gets the girl, something happens that makes him realize that his plain friend was what he really wanted all along. After a frenetic sequence where he has to chase after her to tell her that he loves her they kiss and a classic 80’s song plays loudly.

I’m torn about this one. On one hand there’s a rare and interesting portrayal of an atheist (always like to see that). On the other hand there’s a really stereotypical portrayal of an evangelical christian (which, to be honest, is also something I always like to see). But the interaction between them and the ultimate crisis presented just doesn’t ring true. The fact that pretty much everybody is a tool doesn’t really help.

This is one of those independent movies where every scene just screams that everybody had a hell of a lot of fun. You’ll recognize almost every actor from prime-time television (the good high-budget, well-written stuff, not the schlock). It really just seems, in the best of ways, like a bunch of talented friends got together on a long weekend and made a movie.

We’re definitely approaching the limits of mass appeal for X-Men. The fact that this is basically “Jim Henson’s X-Men Babies” make it more likely to be accessible to fans of the previous films, but pretty much everybody else will be lost.
