Comedy, 98 Minutes, 2011
There’s some funny shit here; quite a bit of it in fact. Ultimately the movie ended up falling flat for me however. Nothing specific really stands out; it’s just the same slow descent into unfunny plot-housekeeping that plagues the vast majority of modern comedies.
Sci-fi/Horror, 88 Minutes, 2011
FINALLY an alien movie with something a little different! No grey-skinned, multi-limbed, claw-handed, slit-eyed generic E.T.s here! (OKay… there is one – kinda – but it’s small and gets killed almost immediately.) The aliens here are jet-black, hairy, indistinct beasts with row upon row of luminescent teeth. While this relatively simple effect may have been chosen for budget reasons it was used beautifully and to repeatedly great effect.

Had a lot of fun with this. The characters were all likable and while admittedly exaggerated and a little single-dimensional all had an engaging, genuine core.

Meh. I couldn’t get into this one. Basically it wandered around the point for a while then ended poorly.
A couple decide to get dropped off on an uninhabited island for two weeks. But – ohmygosh! – there’s a ghost on the island. How do we know that? Via the worst exposition technique ever, of course: they find an old journal detailing the only interesting events in the film. Events that we get to hear about, but not see.
The main characters are just punching-bags throughout the entire movie. They display almost no survival instinct at all. It’s like watching baby seals get clubbed. Clubbed by a ghost.

I find it difficult to review this. There are elements of an absolute classic here, make no mistake. At the same time there are hallmarks of a watch-once-and-throw-away disposable date flick.

I did like this – quite a bit actually – but ultimately it collapses under its own weight and that’s a shame. It starts out strong but fragments at the end and wobbles unsteadily between horror movie cliché and attempts at introspective depth.

This one kind of slipped through the cracks for me. It stands out as something that I should have watched a long time ago but somehow never got around to.

This is an excellent movie but not for the squeamish or faint of heart. There’s very little actual gore here, but what there is disturbingly, ball-crunchingly effective. This is a movie that – especially for men – may strike too close to home.

My brother suggested I watch this and when a movie has a better-than-average chance of being good I like to wait and watch with my lovely bride (who has less patience for schlock that I do). So tonight we sat down and enjoyed this.

Ben Affleck takes a lot of crap (it might be because he’s done a lot of shitty movies, but that’s just a guess) but he actually pulls this one off pretty well. It may just nostalgia for Boston (we lived there for 15 years) but we,both my wife and I, enjoyed this.
