Last November, on our sister site MoreBrains.com, I reviewed a rare thing: a clever, low-budget horror movie. “Mimesis” was a zombie-less zombie movie that impressed me on multiple levels. I spent more time than I should have picking on its overly academic title. If you do know what that is you’re probably really pissed-off that I just called it a “grown-up dress-up party with rubber swords”. Don’t be mad – no offense intended – just trying to reach a middle ground.

When approached by a stranger who suggests that he check out a house just left of the ass-end of nowhere, he decides, “why not?” On the way up they meet another family, headed by the versatile Art LaFleur [IMDB], looking for the same house.

Movies are always “based” on the true story because movies never – ever – actually stick to the true story. If Hollywood saw a guy loan a stranger a dollar for the bus, they’d make a movie about a guy who kills 50 ninjas to rescue his hostage wife… who has a dollar to give that other guy for the bus. Then the bus would explode.

Nolan has problems. His wife has gone into premature labor. The hospital is really busy. Her blood pressure is high and she may be preeclampsic. Oh and, yeah, there’s a category five hurricane knocking on the door. Since this is 2005 and this particular hurricane is named “Katrina”… yes – Nolan has problems.
